Semester/Term Abroad

Carl Duisberg Campus offers Academic Semester/Term Abroad Programs in:

  • Liberal Arts
  • Business
  • Engineering

Ten or fifteen weeks: Spring or Fall semester, or Winter, Spring and Fall term. This for-credit program is especially designed for American undergraduate students. It is located in Cologne, Berlin or Munich in Germany. Other locations are available upon request.

The Academic Program

Up to 5 semester course options - all taught in English - in business or liberal arts or engineering combined with German language instruction and field trips. All courses are agreed on with the home institution and have a European component. Students choose four or five courses which suit their academic requirements. Independent study courses or internships can be arranged for an additional fee. Credits are earned through the home institution.

Cultural Program and Academic Field Trips

Academic field trips and site visits throughout Europe are an integral part of the semester/term program. Students have the choice of visiting Paris, Lyon, Lille (France), Prague (Czech Republic), Vienna, Salzburg (Austria), Budapest (Hungary), Venice, Milan, Rome (Italy), Brussels and Bruges (Belgium), and Bonn, Berlin, Frankfurt, Leipzig and Dresden (Germany). They will meet local business leaders and corporate managers, visit important cultural sites, and take guided city tours. They will experience local cuisine and culture, and learn about life in both Western and Eastern Europe. Additional guest speakers will be invited to give special presentations related to course content.

There are also opportunities for personal travel at the weekends with two or three "long" weekends planned. (Most major European cities can be reached from Cologne within half a day.)

Room & Board

Two types of accommodation are offered: living with a German host family, or in an independent apartment (for an additional fee).

Morning and evening meals are included with the host family option. We strongly recommend students live with a host family. The families are carefully selected and are familiar with hosting students.

Living with a host family offers an excellent opportunity for regular German language practice, as well as providing built-in support as students become accustomed to living in a new culture.

A free apartment will be available for accompanying faculty members.
