I went to Lakefield camp during my summer holidays. I really enjoyed the time there. I met students from Southern America, French Canada, Spain, France, Mexico, China, Russia and Germany. My tip: Don’t stick to people of your own country! It is much better to meet students from other countries, with other languages – it is much more fun! I made friends with some Mexican girls and one Spanish girl, and I learned a few words in Spanish from them. It was always lots of fun, because I couldn’t get the Spanish ‘R’ right. They always discussed about the correct pronunciation, because there are differences between the Spanish they speak in Spain and in Mexico. My favourite Spanish word is mariposa = butterfly. In exchange I taught them some German words.
Everybody had two lessons of English per day. Every day there were three activities. You could decide on three activities for a week, the next week you could choose new ones. You had a great choice: from windsurfing and canoeing through soccer, basketball and tennis to dancing and arts. I chose soccer, basketball and arts. The counsellors were all very friendly and helpful.
In my basketball group I was the only girl. I was also the youngest, unfortunately – or maybe not, because all the boys who were much taller than I tried to involve me a lot and they were all very nice.
My highlight of the camp was the drama group. Students who could speak English well enough could choose ‘drama’ instead of the two lessons of English per day. We were a group of boys and girls from all countries and from all age-groups: The youngest was ten and from China, and the oldest was 17 and from Mexico. In the first week we started with “trusting games “ and went on with little role plays. (We didn’t do just role plays, we did much better things! But I don’t want to tell too much in case you go there and take drama, too.) It wasn’t just that we did drama production there, it was also the great atmosphere that I liked so much. You really could trust everybody and you could do and say whatever you wanted without having fear of somebody laughing at you. It was as if we were a great family. It was soooo cool!!!!!!! So if you go there, try to take drama!
Lakefield camp was so nice, I would love to go there again and again! Everything is very well organised, the residence houses are very nice, the food is good, the activities are great and the counsellors are really nice people, too!
My tip: Just do it! Go there, see whether I’m right and tell me! Have fun and write to me how you liked it!
